(Note that while you
can purchase a domain name from Network Solutions,
the hosting company we recommend provides a single
domain name registration with your first year
signup)
Your Domain Name --- yourname.com
Your location on the internet is defined by your domain name. Your domain name becomes part of your web URL (www.yourdomain.com) and email addresses (you@yourdomain.com). Strive for a short, memorable, and easy to type domain name.
You purchase the rights to a domain name for a reasonable yearly fee ($20/yr or less). Domain names are allocated by one of several registration companies. A surprising number of domain names are already registered, so you may have to try several before you find an ideal one. If you allow your domain name registration to expire, the name is released for re-issue to any other party.
The most common (and desirable) domain names have a suffix of ".com". Web browsers assume ".com" if no suffix is given, eg. typing lostriverpress into your browser is sufficient to reach this site. There are other suffixes available, but we suggest you will get the best results with a ".com" name.
A good place to determine the availability of a domain name is the Network Solutions web site.
